For some years now, there have been available specific applications for people with autism (typically for Windows environments) as well as specific devices (SGD – Speech Generation Device, AAC – Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and material kits (for example, paper card sets with different images as a support for communication), mostly in English and with prices that often get up into the hundreds or thousands of dollars.
But in recent years, aware of the opportunities provided by the new touch screen devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch and the IPad, as well as other systems like those based on Google’s Android, dozens of applications have appeared for these devices, again mostly in English, but at prices usually ranging between 0 and less than 50 dollars. In addition, there are already thousands of educational and leisure applications not specifically developed for individuals with ASD but which may also be very useful for them.
Overall, therefore, the picture begins to be overwhelming. So the first thing I present here is a series of application categories and a list of applications for each of these categories. The categories are only indicative, and some applications could be included in more than one category (something specially true with some apps devoted to learning language and communicating, for example). There are apps specifically designed for people with autism and other which are aimed to help people with special needs in general or that are even totally generic. Our intention is to test each one and publish in-depth reviews of them in this blog. Meanwhile, this post will be updated with new applications continuously.
How to Read the List
The list is divided into 14 categories. For each one, there is an application table with the following columns:
- App logo.
- iPad version data: app name (by clicking it you can see the corresponding iTunes web page); other applications that are variants of the main one; year of the latest version; and prices in dollars and euros.
- iPhone / iPod touch version data (same fields). In case this app also supports the iPad, this cell and the previous one will be combined. If the iPad or the iPhone are not supported, an “x ” is shown (but keep in mind that iPhone apps can be used in an iPad using the “2x” display mode).
- Website with more information on the app provided by the developer or its distributor.
- List of languages supported by the app.
- A link to the review of the application published in this blog, if it is already written (represented with the “TEST” logo).
- A short description of the app. This is NOT meant to be a well-thought summary but only an indication of its functionality.

There are already many apps, so when I add a new one I include a “NEW” logo inside its cells and leave it there for at least 2 months. This way, you can come back to this post from time to time and see rapidly which apps have been added.

The Entire List
1. COMMUNICATION WITH IMAGES / AAC
Apps created to support communication based on images, usually offering a set of pre-loaded images (between dozens and thousands) but allowing also to add many others, to group them into categories, to add audio clips, etc., or apps that provide other forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
2. PICTURE SCHEDULING / SOCIAL STORIES / AAC
Apps for showing or constructing sequences of images, typically of actions to perform, to provide a framework known of what to do or what it is going to happen, a schedule of activities to do, etc. Many also allow you to work as AAC, so this category can be considered as a subset of the previous one but consisting on apps with even more features.
3. TEXT-TO-SPEECH / AAC
Text-to-speech (TTS) apps that allow you to type or select words or phrases which are then converted to a human voice. These apps with an iPad or iPhone can be considered equivalent to an SGD (Speech Generation Device). They also are categorized as AAC. One key aspect, which also largely determines the price, is the type of voice generated. It can be “metallic” or “natural” (based on thousands of stored audio clips, even for voices of men and women). Supported languages are critical. I do not include apps for translating texts, apps to read emails, web pages, etc, or those apps with very low prices that offer only a very simple synthesized speech without any other feature.
4. EMOTIONS
Apps for describing emotions or showing typical facial expressions, emotion recognition exercises, etc.
5. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
Apps that show correct social behaviors or skills, or common community situations. They are typically based on multimedia presentations or video clips (video modeling).
6. ORAL AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE
A variety of apps that help to develop oral and/or written language (even to validate sentences). Some apps are simply vocabulary flashcards accompanied by audio clips. Others include vocabulary exercises or even phrase creation practice. Supported languages are critical. The frontier with generic learning applications is diffuse.
7. LANGUAGE THERAPY / ARTICULATION / SLP
These are tools to practice the pronunciation of certain phonemes and spoken language in general, and are usually presented as applications to treat SLP (Speech Language Pathologies). Supported languages are critical.
8. THERAPIES SUPPORT / DTT / ABA
Applications to perform exercises based on DTT (Discrete Trial Teaching) or ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), as categorizations, generalizations or practicing receptive language. Some let you set the exercises to perform, execute them and record the results.
9. MOTOR SKILLS / EYE CONTACT
Apps to practice motor skills (fine motor skills, oral motor skills, etc.) or just to practice the gestures necessary to use a touch device or even eye contact, smile or dance.
10. TOKEN REINFORCEMENT / TOKEN ECONOMY
Apps that allow you to define a prize (for example, an image or a text) and a series of actions to perform in order to get it. These are generic applications aimed at all children, but used especially for people with autism.

3. TEXT-TO-SPEECH / AAC
Text-to-speech (TTS) apps that allow you to type or select words or phrases which are then converted to a human voice. These apps with an iPad or iPhone can be considered equivalent to an SGD (Speech Generation Device). They also are categorized as AAC. One key aspect, which also largely determines the price, is the type of voice generated. It can be “metallic” or “natural” (based on thousands of stored audio clips, even for voices of men and women). Supported languages are critical. I do not include apps for translating texts, apps to read emails, web pages, etc, or those apps with very low prices that offer only a very simple synthesized speech without any other feature.
